@David BarronAs a tax-sheltered retirement vehicle, a self-directed IRA has some limitations surrounding how actively involved you can be. 

It probably should also be on any advertising such as the side of their vehicle (although some skip that).

In my experience, financial advisors focus on a few vehicles and are good at giving you general advice and managing the investments, but all at a markup and never for the best performance.

You will also need Business Auto coverage for any vehicle owned by the business.

So using the 401(k)/IRA as a vehicle to save a downpayment doesn't seem necessary, especially accounting for the riskiness of the 401k account.  

I use it as a vehicle to acquire more income property.
