In Phila, I believe that info is stored with the register of wills office but I am pretty sure you have be either a relative, executor or attorney to request a copy of the will.

The big box stores have store credit cards with no payments for up to 24 months on transactions over $500 or $1000. 

I understand that municipal/court registrars will store mortgage related data (I have seen this for Miami-Dade county).

@David Dachtera , people liked what you said, but the example of net worth paying for groceries is a logical fallacy because if you have no debt (and that high net worth),  you could buy the whole grocery store, without crawling to anybody to ask to borrow.

This versus a clothing store that can almost move overnight. 

You can walk into a grocery store, ask for the manager, say you want 1G milk for $0.42.

Maybe he doesn't have anywhere to take the appliances and it will cost him money to store them.
