The technical reason you should leave the heat on low is that a lot of the materials used to build home don't do well at low temperatures and/or low humidity.

As far as there not being a plan to protect the water heater, I try to be objective and honest with myself when assessing problems so I would say that I do agree that there was not enough of a plan in place to protect the water heater because I never considered a circumstance of freezing temperatures mixed with power outages.

As far as the water temperature have you checked the settings on the tank ?

Not to mention the extremely abnormal sub zero temperatures we got 2 weeks ago, our house did great!

Throughout the rest of the freeze, my roommates leaked the spigots and battled temperatures as low as 38 degrees in the house as the Texas Freeze Fiasco raged on across the state.

They say you should have resistance electric for extreme temperatures.

For what it’s worth, with the falling cases in Covid and the frigid winter temperatures, rolling power downs, icy roads in many of these “destination” tier 2 markets, I am seeing fewer posts and noise on this topic.
