I would like more specifics about the 3-5 key factors one should focus on (ie population trends, area employers, crime, legal/landlord friendliness) AND what are good values for those factors.

It's a bit of a problem that the markets where our talents are demanded tend to be the lowest for cashflow and landlord friendliness (in the legal system).The list of metros you mentioned are great places to work as an engineer.

Few things:- Population growth- Job Growth- Landlord friendliness (aka not California)- Diverse industriesThose 4 things take out much of the country, but still do give quite a few opportunities.Sources include Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census.gov, and other organizations like those.
