Perils not covered on basic but covered on special would be (some not all): Theft (important in Detroit), water damage (frozen pipes certainly happen in MI), weight of ice and snow (same), etc.I know of markets that do write special up there, such as Diamond State, Scottsdale, etc, but it's not a low cost policy.

My wife works in fashion and we currently live in NJ, but we aren't ruling out a move to California or even Spain in the next few years. 4) Stress - My friends that own homes are CONSTANTLY bitching and moaning about "mowing the lawn", "shoveling the snow", "cleaning the gutters", "replacing the *insert expensive thing here*".

It could be gray and crappy for 2 months, but on the day of the parade it's "Sunny and 72".Midwesterners, tuning in to see their local Big-10 team play USC or whoever, see ridiculously beautiful So-Cal weather, then look out the window to see snow drifts covering their cars and say: "Honey, that's it, were moving to LA!"
