Typically pet supply stores are found in retail strips (at least in Boston area they are), and some are nice and clean, and some are not, so since you would be the adjacent owner, I'd ask the same question, do you want to be seeing a pet store next to your front door for next ten years?

We had a tenant terminate early so I took those funds and replaced all outlet fixtures/covers (where required), HVAC exhaust vents/returns, light bulbs, professionally cleaned, painted all closets, a ceiling that was yellowing, and touched up the walls and trim.

Upon move-out we have them send a picture of the unit to confirm it's all cleaned out, so in most cases we aren't even going out to check on it.

@Sarah BridgesShort term rentals are going to be your best return in the area, you might have to put in more work up front setting up a reliable cleaning crew and handyman, but after that things become pretty automated.I always recommend self managing as well.
