Manufactures of "cord and plug" units design them to work on a 15 amp circuit since that may be where they're plugged in.A dedicated 50 amp, 220 volt circuit, such as for a range, can provide a lot more power.  

It was an area of big old oaks and semi custom homes. 

I have time to dedicate to the the work and am reasonably handy and able to learn but have minimal experience with home repairs outside of basic things.

You need to allocate the necessary capital to fix such a problem (typically around $15,000 or so) and to make sure that you have sufficient room on the property to drill on.It's also possible that there could be laws that dictate where on the property you can drill if you have to replace the well, such as setbacks, etc.The bottom line is that you simply want to make sure that you are 100% aware of the state, county and city laws so that you never risk being in a position where you can't provide water to your customers.

You can win sometimes on arguments of unconscionability, durress or unequal bargaining power if the managing body won't make a decision on its right of first refusal, but otherwise you usually have to play ball.I work mostly in DuPage and Kane Counties, so your mileage may vary if you're buying Will County or Winnebago County properties, simply due to local custom.
