If you see water leaking out of the drain pipes when doing this, then it's definitely the drain.You can also test it the other way if you have a bucket - hopefully at least a 2 gallon bucket, and 5 if it will fit under the tub spout.

But things like changing faucets, replacing sink drain pipes, etc is fairly simple, it is just a matter of buying LOTS of different fittings so you are sure you have the best one, and return the rest.HVAC lesson learned was shut off the breaker to the furnace before changing a thermostat.
