That did not do much on the official listing so it was just up to me whether I still wanted to buy.

I ask because as I understand it, the Sherriff is often the institution that facilitates the 'official' foreclosure auctions.If so, I'd love to hear more about that.

@Juan Alvarez have to double check with a lender, the official language is something like "may not have ownership interest in other residential property" rather than "first time buyer." 

I also suggest looking at the actual VA loan terms on the official government website, https://www.benefits.va.gov/homeloans/purchaseco_e... , that will get you started but you'll have to dig around in there.
