Articulate your priorities and goals.  

Even if folks can't necessarily articulate them, there's always some sort of investment hypothesis in these situations, and I'm really curious what your hypothesis is. 

I agree with @Jim Sokoloff  and in fact, Jon Holdman has posted in other threads a  list of reasons why he doesn't think it's a good idea (and he articulates it much better than I ever could...)

Your comments are well articulated and come from a place of knowledge and experience.

Curious to know, if there were specific books (like 10 X rule) that articulated the kind of mindset needed to achieve his or her goals, or if it was developed from consistent routine setting/actions, or from overcoming adversity, or all of them?

The true value of the designer in our minds is the 'entire spreadsheet'  you mentioned above so we have a well articulated idea of the work product.

I think if you can articulate it to them in a non-combative, but direct way you'll get the price you want.  

The "elephant's" biggest need (generally speaking) is time.You would be better served if you can articulate your specific skill sets, rather than just saying, "I'll do whatever..."

Also key to cash flow is self-managing, which you will be completely able to do as an articulate, intelligent human with time on your hands. :) Good luck making a great decision for you and your family!
