Also the stress level during the days or weeks when you know you have a problem but don't yet know how much time or money it will take to resolve it.

You feel uncomfortable with this as it is, so resolve it until you are comfortable.

Things I do include:- Job walk with them to gauge compatibility, sincerity, aptitude- call references (what do you ask their references?)
