We had torn out the old ugly cabinets and removed the soffit above them (and moved the small amount of wiring in them), and wanted the higher wall cabinets to offer more storage for the small unit.

FOR REFERENCE, THIS IS WHAT UPSTAIRS LOOKS LIKE: My gut wants to go with Option 2 because this means it's a full-fledged 4/2 with a master bathroom PLUS that bonus 10x12 room upstairs (half of which would probably be converted into closet/storage space).

My guess is that the roof is flat; and solar panels should be angled a bit facing south I believe, so you might have to add some structure for that; then you would need an inverter, and you might even want a bank of batteries for storage (and maybe not since you can sell excess generated electricity back to PECO).
