I removed the lid and noticed the little chain from the tank lever to the flapper formed a knot, which shortened the chain, which prevented the flapper from closing.

And most of what I know on this migration into the north-west, I have read in newspapers, which I have committed to my memory, with the Wall Street Journal as best for such info. but the McClatchy newspaper chain (Idaho Statesman) has in past years done stories on this topic, which have not appeared in the Journal.
