I would start off by asking the investment sponsor if they have or are under investigation by the government.

I think the correct way to handle this is :The normal cost paid to investigate or otherwise pursue the acquisition of real property need not be capitalized if they relate to activities performed in determining whether to acquire real property and which real property to acquire. 

I don't know what will happen, but the word is that the investigation continues on this thing and criminal charges are possible.
