So even if the gas is in the tenant’s name, if they don’t pay and skip town, the past-due gas bill can be issued as a lien against the house (and the owners responsibility)There are other cities that do this too - so you have to research your utilities to be sure your theory holds up.

They should issue you a 1099-int if the interest paid exceeded $10, but you are still responsible for paying the tax even if they do not issue the 1099-int.
