They could be testing you to see what they can get away with.It's the 17th do if they paid the old owner for April, you should have gotten a partial payment (if it was part of your contract) for a half month's rent as part of the closing. 

Tenants will test you all the time and until they know you're serious they will keep seeing what they can get away with.
