You could do that for a period of time and get your mortgage paid off twice as fast, if that's what you wanted to do, then use a HELOC (or some other form of loan of your choosing) to renovate it into a SFH...Obviously I don't know what your family's needs are but I'd be interested in hearing if you'd considered this, if you don't mind?

Which is why I mentioned the possibility that the most likely scenario would be downsizing from the single-family home he has now to a smaller condo still in NJ which he would be able to split his time between NJ and Los Angeles.

Hello all, there's a single family property I'm looking at in a neighborhood/city that has plenty of multi family duplexes. 

Over the years I'd continue to like to buy more house hacks, get my RE license and (depending on the market) acquire a few duplexes/multi-families all on a slow but consistent basis.
