I would ask him directly about his alleged ownership until you are satisfied that you understand it, and definitely ask him when he plans to pay the past due property taxes as well.However, even if the person you are paying rent to is not the legal owner, he still is in control of the property.

I have a low opinion of realtors in general, but those are serious allegations.

If you're the one alleging a crime, same thing, are you going to assume the defense attorney will take actions that will result in their own client being convicted?
