I am just trying to understand what elements of the tax code are specifically favorable to real estate, as opposed to other businesses.  

Read some of those books recommended at www.BiggerPockets/Books  Interact on the forums.  :-)  Definitely practice analyzing deals so you know a good deal when you finally find it.

Hello All,I've recently gotten into real estate and at this point only posses academic knowledge along with that from interactions with other real estate investors.

I have ambitious long-term goals for real estate involving lifestyle growth as well as financial, but my primary near-term goal is to close on my first investment property by the end of 2017.Without getting into too much detail, my strategy involves flipping single family homes in the Pensacola area (Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties) to raise capital and generate profits to reinvest, facilitating the development and growth of a long-term rental portfolio.I look forward to meeting and interacting with you all here on BP going forward.

I like this choice because you can see who people recommended and who they decided to go with based on their interactions among the many CPA's(depending of if they shopped around).
