I love your idea to begin with a house hack, it's uncomfortable but I am sure you are comfortable being uncomfortable, being an Army Vet.Now is a good time to invest since there are many not buying at the moment, so take advantage and be creative! 

When first starting out do not do anything that would make you uncomfortable.
