I was unclear about how someone got a negative influence but after reading the post (thanks for the hyperlink Ralph) about how the influence system works it's pretty clear.Someone with a high negative influence had to be spamming quite a bit and not really participating on the forum to get to that point.

If you look at the original purchase deal and apply the 50% rule, it indeed will barely cash flow for the buyer but as with many buyers out there, I suspect he's not applying the 50% rule.
