Or why not pass a criminal defense law that says the prosecution cannot spend more money than the defense (equal funding to both sides) - so that less people are compelled against their will to take a plea deal that includes a conviction just because they're scared to get a worse outcome if they go to trial with a public defender with 1/10th the budget to put on a defense.

I would prefer that the courts allow a defense from loss of income due to the situation and put those evictions on hold with the defendant providing a written document about how their income has changed.

Our attorney's update was to remind us of all this.She wanted to remind us as she defends 100s of landlords and on down the road in 3 or 4 months when you go to evict a problem tenant, wh8 now has free legal representation that the tenant groups are still meeting and trying to get approved, she doesn't want to have to also fight a fair housing issue too.
