Sometimes, in the case of an eviction, I think the tenant may have stolen them, but mostly I think it's just opportunistic scavengers who see the U-Haul in the driveway and come back that night to take them.

We also did that previously in a house built in 1840 obviously with no insulation.We're in for the long haul and want energy usage to be as low as we can.

U-Haul is a for profit company (publicly trades Amerco, 2018 10-K here contains no mention of the CA mass exodus) and IMO their pricing model simply reflects supply and demand.

Candidly, wholesaling is just another job (and a harder one at that) and I would wonder why anyone would quit their job and haul off and start wholesaling. 

We both remembered eachother, and had a good laugh about the kids toys/trinkets I kept finding stashed/lost years into my ownership.

And make good choices with purchases, such as looking at cars as tools and not toys, living in a house or apartment that fits your needs instead of wants (you do not need that McMansion), not eating out every night or ordering takeout, thinking you are entitled to fancy vacations every year, and shopping for clothes at reasonable prices.
