Going from a 20 minute commute to a 45 minute commute, and giving up a 4 bedroom 2 bath detached single family house for a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom unit in a plex with a shared wall, if that's the entirety of the story, does not make sense, that looks like occupancy fraud.
