@Morgan Basham - Well your first line of defense is running your numbers. 

In retrospect, this was probably all a big defensive show, an amateur's bumbling way to try to train a student living in an obviously illegal basement apartment.

An example of that would be flying into a town on a Thursday (travel days are considered business days), attending to actual business (meetings, conference, whatever) on Friday, taking Saturday and Sunday off for fun (non-business), and then doing business again on Monday, and ultimately flying home on Tuesday (another travel/business day). 

The main thing you lose out on is the defense you get from depreciation.

Of course by all means confer with your attorney before you take any legal actions.

I would think 1/4" sheetrock, supported 16" or 24" in confer wouldn't have an issue supporting insulation (batt or blown in).
