Finally, what would a state, such as California which makes so much money from LLC's and corporations ($800/year minimum tax), stand to gain by having their entities rendered so powerless?

It's free-standing, i.e., does not connect to the house in any way.

@Jeff Lee  BWW can get noisy but we sit on the patio and it wasn't bad last time except for some windy rain that blew in near the end.Besides, with friends as passionate about REI as @Michael Faulk is the music doesn't stand a chance.

I'm just thankful it wasn't black mold and that it was confined to the basement.At the end of the day I'm actually very happy with the situation - it was a great learning experience, no one was harmed, my house is still standing and bringing in checks, I learned how to remove mold, and now I get to share my mistakes with BiggerPockets and hopefully prevent someone else from making the same mistakes!
