Depending on the well, it's depth, age and a million other factors, contamination.If it's an old hand dug well, beware, cause you'll be drinking groundwater.

Additionally, if the well is more than a certain depth (I cannot recall off the top of my head) you require steps/ladder to ensure someone can climb out of the well.
