I have a time frame for selling next spring but would like to move forward with my next purchase this calendar year.My question is this, when I sell next spring, can I 1031 exchange some of the money into my second property that I purchase this year?

I would list it on Air BnB and VRBO first and coordinate calendars.

My question is - Would it be worth filing an amendment to my 2017 taxes to reclassify this property as a rental, or would this property still not qualify as a rental because it was not rented or listed for rent in the 2017 calendar year?

You can do this by looking for comparable properties on AirBNB, VRBO, or local property manager sites and checking their calendars (though that's going to be most reliable for the next couple of months, less reliable for dates further out).  

Filing an action in bankruptcy court can cost you $1,000 of attorney fees and the motions are set to a calendar for a month or two later.
