The 401k may not transact in any way that provides a direct or indirect benefit to you.Simply "protecting" your property from development as you state could be viewed as a benefit to you.

We put $20,000 into and made it really nice.  

Her brother (my uncle) has been getting solicitations by developers to sell his house- which is in a really nice, upscale NJ suburb on a direct train line to NYC.

Would be nice to know in order to figure in to having to possibly do this some day.I'm still just looking for properties, but this type of thing would be exactly the type of thing to make me nervous about the process.
