A logical argument is that we needed to print and borrow this money for a "soft landing" and to "prevent the next great depression", recapitalizing banks, etc; i.e a necessary evil.

I'd probably have them topped just in case of a big storm. check the roots to see if their growing into the foundation or septic, If so, then I would have the trees removed.

The tenants should respect the property and maintain it to prevent this from happening just as the landlord should act promptly to eliminate this issue if the source is outside the control of the tenants.
