There are still layoffs happening (ex: SAIT, though it's a post secondary school, the economy affects everything.) - Although house prices have dipped a fair bit over the last 3 years, they are still quite high and for an investment property, you will need 20% down for a conventional mortgage.

You can download the robinhood app which doesn't charge per transaction and since you are just trying to invest your money instead of keeping it in your savings you can just invest in some safe slow growing stocks.

If you can't deal directly with people, make sure your agent can.Long ago you could lay-off L/T problems to a Property Manager, no longer, dispute or legal actions go right to the Owner and a 12 year old kid can track down the actual owner!
