Unfortunately we were planning on doing all of this in July but his current contract is up in mid-April 2017 and we haven't made any decisions whether he will re-enlist, extend, or separate.  

Other reasons are that FHA usually allows a higher debt-to-income ratio than Conventional, allows a lower credit score, and can have some more flexible underwriting guidelines.It's always best to find an experienced loan officer with a strong product arsenal to help you fit into the best product, and educate you so that YOU can make the right decision.

Should we reconsider our decision to focus on long term in your opinion?

I make my RE investment decisions based at trends since human behavior don't change be it now or 100 years ago.

Or since their main request is to get cost of materials back, buy a plant. gift card or other housewarming gift of equal value.I would respond with whatever your decision is in writing.  

I have made the decision to invest, but perhaps it is better to work on building a larger downpayment and waiting for the market to come down before investing.
