There are some things you can do to protect yourself, such as getting multiple estimates and sticking with contractors that are reputable (for example, I found that sites that have a rating that contractors need to maintain like Angie's List provides better contractors versus places like Craigslist where it's the wild West.).

I would look up the city's development site and see where new development or public dollars are going.Once you get that info, find about 10 neighborhoods, go out and drive them and reduce the number down to about 2-4.

You can't throw it in dumpster unfortunately.You can bag it up to make it easier to carry outside.The constable has to stay there until house is emtied out so you need to have a crew their to carry out the stuff.Then everyone will come pick through it and make a mess.Then you have to haul off the junk and clean up all the debris.
