People will get creative with people who they believe in, but if it's just blind bids for a random customer that they don't know, then I'm surprised they aren't asking for 50% upfront.

Unlikely to find that by calling random phone numbers, so buy some folks some beers at the REIA meetup and ask for a referral. 

I also occasionally have random people come to my house trying to intimidate me into paying them to do odd jobs.
