I've been happy with chinese cabinet suppliers rather than big box stores so id rather choose something like that.

It would also be a huge boost to have a major job supplier move in and offer jobs and infrastructure to an area.  

You'll pay a price premium, because they can't get the same prices from suppliers as the big guys... however, they frequently will offer more interesting plans/ elevations than a production builder.

The nation wide list suppliers go for quantity over quality and I bet if you concentrate on your local area you can build some niche lists that everyone else is not marketing to.
