My Mom lives in Holland, MI and my brother in BangorMI and I spent part of my childhood in Lansing.

Protecting our healthcare systems might just be destroying them.My business partners are in East Lansing and they pretty much said the same thing regarding their Detroit properties, most of which are medical office.   

But, that's also due to the fact that places like Lansing are more of a rental market than a flip market...and even that depends on what area of the city you're talking about.My advice would be to attend a few auctions and get a sense for how they work.

I too am from Michigan but differ only in that I 5 year plans to start investing in that market, most likely Lansing/Ingham County.
