I have an extensive background in home repairs and construction in general but lack experience when it comes to estimating larger scale jobs.

While looking for properties however, the ones in this price range all seem to need extensive work and repair (something I do not want to do on my first financed property).

I personally think that modern architecture, with the square lines and walls of windows and weird angles jutting out (and extensive use of black- what's with that?!)
