Corroded pipes under the kitchen sink that had a horrible taste and smell to the water, it was then that they offered to let us break our lease but arent being forthcoming with the deposit... which im assuming they spent quickly.

So EMWV and I guess it's simply a matter of taste and local market customs.

Location, personal taste, standard of living, etc.

Often bungalows owned by OAPs are solid brick, well-built houses that need updating to modern tastes, new carpet, cabinets, etc. 

The agent might get a bad taste in their mouth after repeating this cycle over and over again, especially of there is no money to be made in it...I think you should definitely do your homework and ask your agent for help once you have narrowed down your criteria, market, etc and have analyzed some potential leads.
