I read a book about landlording (I forget which one), decided it looked a lot like teaching (managing people, space/equipment and information) and started talking about doing it.

Firstly a landlord is not equipped to do that, so they resort to some crude measure like ssn's but as we have seen an ssn or not is not determinative either way. 

Professionals are aware of the ins & outs and are better equipped to do things more effectively.
