Hi everybody, there is a duplex for sale in my area for 90k with an unfinished basement. If finished is it legal for me to make it a third unit?

Just make sure that in the future get as detailed as you can.  

Do not try to do everything yourself.Always do the math analysis and try to look at the subject property before you make an offer or at least have a clause in the sales contract that allows you the time (usually about 15 days) to make a detailed inspection and possibly back out of the deal without a penalty that hurts   Right after you close on a deal get an insurance policy that will protect you in case of a loss.Just do what is average for the neighberhood.

That extra 1.5k a month could really vanish extremely quickly if you have an issue with a rental property or a tenant.

Check out my profile for more detail, but the short version is: I was a Realtor/Loan Officer in HI between 2004-2006, so I understand that aspect.

Take the extra 700/month (1650 rent for Unit 1-950 basement rent=700) and pay off the 2nd.
