Demand for properties in alternative locations may dry up very quickly, leaving you with an unwanted asset that you may find challenging to sell if the market turns sour.Factor in as well that unless you travel often, you will have to rely on trusted local partners such us property managers, lawyers, etc.

Other than that, usually insurance checks are used for asset replacement, medical expenses, "pain and suffering", etc.I'll also add that, if the proceeds are not reinvested quick enough, then the insurance payout may be viewed as capital gains, in which case you would need to pay taxes.Hope this helps!

One other thought is to boost your existing cash flow: cater to traveling nurses/construction workers/people moving to your area by transitioning the long-term rentals you have in high-value locations into furnished short term rentals of 30 days minimum.
