The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with tenants praising the convenience of it, and never having to remember a check or money order again. 

The fact of the matter is this: YOU, and others, whoever they may be, think that one is a shill - just because the poster has praised this "guru" or that one.

I also believed everyone singing their praises here on BiggerPockets and other places with comments like, 'the best out there' 'one of the best, great quality repairs, etc. 

They don’t have to be recently remodeled necessarily... although that never hurts... if you can avoid the down-time of the property being renovated it will just work out better for you.Some people sing the praises of 1031 exchanges... but just know it doesn’t get you out of the taxes unless you die owning the property.  

I do work to send people to them and tell my friends and clients about them, and post praises about each of them on FB and such,  when they come through for me or my friends/clients. 

I have been to his events and met many of his students and they all praise his program.

Culturally we really praise talent, it almost lets us off the hook if we consider our abilities as God given or not.  

For others, they will praise their investments in turnkeys.Investing in turnkeys allows you the ability to invest in markets you would not normally be able to get into.
