We paid a tenant to do the spring yard cleanup on our home, and to take down a big dead tree at a rental, and gave his number to everyone we knew - he's busy, doing okay now, even though his wife's income stopped.Today was the first time a tenant contacted me in trouble.

Good points above.A contractor who walks off the job is liable for costs to complete the work contracted for, often it costs more because someone comes in who has to 1. clean up a mess in the middle of a project and 2. they inherit the liability of the walk-off contractor.
