If you're handy, you can ask the contractor to bid for very basic interior finishes (enough to get your certificate of occupancy) and then you can DIY a lot of cosmetic upgrades later on (things like painting, adding backsplashes, flooring upgrades, putting in nicer fixtures, etc.).
