Sorry to hear about your situation.Unrelated - there have been many posts over the years regarding the need for "accredited" standards by the SEC for investing in private placements and this kind of situation is why...fraud would be rampant (except people would lose $50k (or their life savings) rather than $5k.

You know that the 6.8% is a fixed rate, and you write off student loan interest anyway. 18k can go a far way given the proper placement and property.
