What are the most important first steps for beginning in the real estate investing world for a complete newbie?

I'll go first:My dream is to one day figure out why an underwater world has showers.

Surely if simple folk like myself are worth one vote, then the Josh Dorkin's, Steve Babiak's and Brandon Turner's of the world are worth like 10 votes.

The current owners owe about 6k in property tax, so not the end of the world, but it that could make or break my bid being the best one out there.
