Resumes tend to be embellished, but if I see significant skin in the game and other connections to people or organizations that I know (LinkedIn helps a great deal) I can gain some confidence in their abilities.

In my opinion, shaking hands and meeting people is much more effective.However, having a site to tell about what you do and to build credibility is a great idea (you can think of it as a digital reference or resume).
