I have been in attendance at sheriff sales where a plaintiff's attorney made an announcement to the effect of "if there is any bidding above my bid, the plaintiff requests postponement" whereupon the sheriff's deputy handling the sale said that once bidding starts, it will be sold to the highest bidder - so if you want the property you must outbid all other bidders.
