We are immigrants from Pakistan who came to the US almost a decade ago and we have two little boys. 

My suggestion is that they invest their money in a good immigration attorney and focus on getting legal status.  

We currently rent to 2 other friends, one has been there 3 years, the other moved in June 1st, and is the senior minister at our church.We are on good terms with all of them.Will this practice bite us in the rear at some point?

We have less immigration which has been a traditional demand driver in Toronto.

I don't know if the tenants are new immigrants or what, but yes they are very low.

Trillions of dollars later and legal immigrants to this country note that we have the most diverse yet richest "poor" people in the world.

The real estate hit of 2008-2010 did not effect every area equally, migration out and immigration trends have changed as once poor areas have gentrified, corporations have come and gone, etc..  

I went through the immigration process myself in the 1980's and it has not changed other than the strict quotas they had back then.
