I'd rather try keeping them with me at all times rather than just keeping a set in my car as I sometimes uber places or take public transportation and am not near my car at all times.

I bought my first property in Boston back in 2009 and rented 2 of the rooms out to friends. 

If you do, do a short-term lease that ends sometime in the sweet spot of Boston area rentals.- Spend some time thinking about how much to spend.

It’s probably not fair you drive a shiny new suv while the poor tenant is taking public transportation, it isn’t fair that you have new designer clothes while your tenant is wearing old Walmart clothing .

Is there a plan for public transportation to enter the neighborhood?  

Now this is a big macro assumption, but you'd have to believe the underlying growth factors of Boston to be pretty strong for the foreseeable future, and companies will continue to open campuses outside the city, e.g.
